If you google ‘Baby Boomer’ by far the most prevalent result you will see is headlines and stories declaring that Baby Boomers aren’t ready for retirement. Many other results set Baby Boomers and Millennials against each other, each declaring that the other is to blame for all their economic woes. The common theme among all these articles however, is fear. While we look forward to retirement and all the hopes we instill in it, in reality, the transition from work to retirement can be a scary, uncertain period in our lives. What do all these articles tell us about how Baby Boomers are heading into retirement? What unique choices are they making that set them apart from previous generations?

When the Chief of the Cohasset Fire Department asked Captain Rob Forde in October 2014 if he wanted to manage a grant the department had just received, he could never have imagined the life it would take on. The grant, a $2000 Senior SAFE Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, serves to install or replace things such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to help keep seniors safe in their homes. This was how Cohasset Cares was born.

I’ve stood in silent prayer at the Atomic Dome in Hiroshima and at Pointe Du Hoc on the shores of Normandy and tried to read every name I could of the brave soldiers buried at the American Cemetery there. Cry Afterwards, I always tell myself. Not now, don’t let tears escape in front of anyone.
